A Brand Devoted to Place and Purpose

The Lighter Collection is a hospitality brand rooted in authenticity, guided by design, and deeply inspired by the natural and cultural beauty of Belize. From our properties in the forest and along the sea, we offer guests the opportunity to reconnect—through thoughtful experiences, intuitive service, and a reverence for place. Wherever we go next, our promise remains the same: hospitality that feels personal, generous, and grounded.

Meet the Team

Daniel Lighter
Founder & Owner

A Canadian native and former criminal prosecutor turned defense attorney, Daniel Lighter practiced law in Montreal for over three decades. A chance solo diving trip to Ambergris Caye sparked a lifelong love for Belize—its people, its natural beauty, and its potential. That passion led him to purchase a small 11-room beachfront hotel on a secluded stretch of the island, which he grew into the Matachica Resort. Later, he expanded the vision with the acquisition of Gaïa Riverlodge, a secluded property nestled in the rainforest of the Mountain Pine Ridge.

Throughout this journey, Daniel remained committed to delivering a level of hospitality previously unavailable in Belize—guided by values of inclusion, authenticity, experiential travel, and understated luxury. With his son Stephen joining the venture to shape its culinary identity, The Lighter Collection has become a family-led brand devoted to raising the bar of Belizean hospitality, one remarkable guest experience at a time.

Stephen Lighter
Director

The son of The Lighter Collection’s founder, Stephen developed a passion for food and wine at an early age. He began his culinary journey working in bakeries in Montreal before earning an associate degree in Baking and Pastry Arts and a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management; with a concentration in Wine Studies from the Culinary Institute of America.

Stephen honed his craft at Bouchon Bakery in Napa Valley and later as a pastry chef de partie at the acclaimed French Laundry. Having spent much of his life visiting Belize, he returned in 2020 to lead a reimagining of the hotels’ dining experiences. For Stephen, the restaurants and resorts are deeply personal—a creative expression of his love for hospitality and a celebration of a country that continues to inspire.

Jorge Cante
General Manager, Matachica

Born and raised in Orange Walk District, Jorge joined Matachica Resort & Spa in 2010 at the age of 18—his first job on Ambergris Caye. Over the years, he has grown with the resort, holding roles across nearly every department, including accounting, front desk, restaurant management, HR, and operations. In January 2024, he was promoted to General Manager, expanding his focus to include sales and business development.

Beyond the resort, Jorge serves as Vice Chairman of both the San Pedro chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association and the Ambergris North Alliance, where he champions sustainability, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation.

As a proud Belizean, Jorge brings deep personal meaning to his role at The Lighter Collection. “In Belize, hospitality is not just a service—it’s a celebration of culture, nature, and connection,” he says. “When we care for the land and each other, we create a community where everyone feels seen, valued, and at home.”

Nigel Richards
General Manager, Gaïa Riverlodge

Nigel Richards brings over two decades of hospitality leadership to his role at Gaïa Riverlodge. He began his career in 2003 at the original Five Sisters Lodge and played an integral role in its transformation into Gaïa. Since 2012, he has overseen the lodge’s day-to-day operations, sustainability initiatives, and guest experience—earning Green Globe Certification and the Belize Hotel of the Year award in 2015. Nigel holds a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Belize and has completed advanced studies in hotel management, food and beverage, and digital marketing. A strong advocate for community engagement and environmental responsibility, Nigel’s leadership is grounded in care, connection, and long-term vision.

“Working at Gaïa Riverlodge and being part of The Lighter Collection has been an incredibly fulfilling journey. The tranquility of the Mountain Pine Ridge, the connection to nature, and the opportunity to lead an environmentally responsible operation all align deeply with my personal and professional values. It’s this shared purpose that makes the work so meaningful and the progress so rewarding.”
