At The Lighter Collection, sustainability is not an initiative; it is the foundation we built on. Our two boutique properties: Matachica Resort & Spa on Ambergris Caye and Gaïa Riverlodge in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve; were designed from the beginning to honour the land, employ the community, and source as close to home as possible. Long before sustainable travel became a search term, we were living it. What follows is not a list of credentials. It is the way we operate every single day.
Sustainability at The Lighter Collection
Eco-Luxury, Rooted in Belize. From Reef to Rainforest.
Powered by the Land: Renewable Energy in the Belizean Rainforest
Gaïa Riverlodge holds Green Globe Certification one of the most rigorous independent sustainability standards in global hospitality. The lodge operates entirely on renewable energy, drawing power from a combination of solar generation and a hydroelectric motor fed by the rivers and rainfall of the Mountain Pine Ridge. When the skies open over the canopy — and they do — we welcome it. The rain that fills our rivers is the same rain that keeps our lights on. For the conscious traveller considering a sustainable luxury hotel in Belize, this is not a marketing claim. It is the mechanical reality of how Gaïa works.
Built by Hand: Belizean Artisan Craftsmanship in Every Detail
The interiors of both Matachica and Gaïa reflect a conscious decision to source within Central America. Finishings are crafted by regional artisans: local hardwoods shaped by hand, textiles woven by traditional makers. Every piece carries the fingerprint of the person who made it and the culture it comes from. We source this way not because it is efficient, but because it is honest. It keeps traditional Belizean craftsmanship alive, supports livelihoods in the Cayo District and beyond, and means the rooms you sleep in are genuinely of this place: not imported, not replicated, not interchangeable with a resort on another coast.
We work directly with the San Antonio Women’s Co-operative in the Cayo District, supporting the artisan economy of the village and offering guests the chance to engage with a centuries-old tradition of Yucatec Mayan craft and culture through our Mayan Cultural Tour.
From the Organic Garden to the Table: Mayan Farming at Gaïa
The on-site organic garden at Gaïa is certified and farmed using traditional Mayan agricultural techniques, methods that have sustained this land for centuries. What grows here feeds the kitchen at Five Sisters Restaurant, recipient of 2 Michelin Keys (2025), and travels across The Lighter Collection to supply Mambo Restaurant on Ambergris Caye. For the traveller who values knowing where their food comes from, the answer here is simple: it comes from the garden you can walk through before dinner.
The cycle does not stop at harvest. Our hens roam the property, and the food waste they do not find is composted into nutrient-rich soil that enriches plant life across both properties. Beyond our own garden, we source directly from employee family-owned farms in the Cayo District, an extension of the community relationship we consider non-negotiable. Surplus produce from the garden is donated to a local old age home, ensuring that what the land gives us flows back to the people who call it home. This is organic farm-to-table dining in Belize at its most genuine, not a marketing phrase, but a supply chain you can see, touch, and taste.
Restoring the Rainforest: Reforestation in Mountain Pine Ridge
In 2025, we began an active reforestation programme in the Mountain Pine Ridge, working to reintroduce broadleaf vegetation to areas of the national park where it had receded. This is slow, unglamorous work; and exactly the kind of commitment we believe in. Belize’s forests are not scenery. They are living systems that regulate water, shelter biodiversity, and anchor the cultures that evolved within them. Bringing them back is the least we can do.
We are also proud partners of Oceana Belize, the leading ocean conservation organisation working to protect Belize’s marine ecosystems, including the UNESCO-listed Belize Barrier Reef. Their work to preserve what lies beneath the surface directly protects the reef experiences our guests at Matachica are privileged to access.
100% Local Employment: People Are Part of the Ecosystem
Every single member of our team is Belizean. One hundred percent. This is not a quota, it is a conviction. We believe that the most meaningful thing a sustainable luxury resort can do for a destination is ensure that the economic value it generates stays within the community that hosts it. Our staff are not service providers imported for a season; they are neighbours, guides, farmers, and storytellers who bring genuine knowledge and genuine warmth to every interaction. When you book an eco-luxury stay with The Lighter Collection, the people who welcome you are the people who belong to the land you are visiting.
Community Partnerships: How Your Stay Gives Back to Belize
Our relationship with Holy Cross Anglican School in San Pedro is one we hold close. The Lighter Collection provides ongoing financial support to the school while our team shows up in person; volunteering time and energy in classrooms and on the grounds of the community where many of them live and raise their own families. This is not a corporate partnership. It is personal.
Through Pack for a Purpose, guests can deepen that connection further: bringing donated supplies directly to Holy Cross and other local schools, turning a carry-on into a contribution. Our relationship with the Ambergris Caye Eco Museum invites guests into the living cultural history of Belize’s cayes. And through Kind Traveler, travellers can book with us while directing a portion of their stay toward verified local causes.
An Invitation to Travel Sustainably in Belize
Sustainability, at its best, is participatory. We invite every guest to be part of it — to visit the garden at Gaïa, to join a beach cleanup at Matachica, to choose a tour that puts money directly into a local guide’s hands, to ask questions and listen to the answers. Belize is one of the last places on earth where genuine wilderness and living cultural heritage exist side by side, largely intact. Keeping it that way is a shared responsibility — and one we take seriously.
